The Presidency says Saudi Arabia’s rare gesture of granting President Bola Tinubu access to the inner chambers of the Holy Kaaba reflects Nigeria’s diplomatic standing and the strength of bilateral relations between both countries.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Special Duties, Tunde Rahman, said the privilege, reserved for Heads of State, monarchs and top dignitaries, went beyond its spiritual significance, affirming the enduring ties of faith, friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

He explained that the decision to accord the Nigerian President such recognition outside the traditional ceremonial schedule was particularly significant as Nigeria sought increased investment, stronger oil cooperation and a larger Hajj quota from Saudi Arabia.

The presidential aide made the remarks in an article titled Inside the Kaaba: A Rare Honour and the Message from Makkah, reflecting on President Tinubu’s recently concluded 2026 Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

According to Rahman, the Saudi Royal Court ordered the doors of the Holy Kaaba opened for President Tinubu on Sunday, November 1, in a rare gesture granted only a few times annually.

Rahman noted that the spiritual experience reinforced President Tinubu’s commitment to national development and ongoing economic reforms, including improvements in workers’ welfare, tax modernisation, student loans and other measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economy.

Describing the experience as an emotional moment for the Nigerian delegation, Rahman recalled that the fencing around the Kaaba was draped in Nigeria’s national colours of green, white and green, symbolising the country’s identity.

The presidential aide also recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari and his delegation received a similar honour in February 2016, while noting that the 2026 pilgrimage marked President Tinubu’s first entry into the Holy Kaaba.

He said President Tinubu expressed appreciation to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for the honour, describing the experience as historic.

“It is an honour that I enjoyed, and it is gracious of them to have allowed me to enter inside the Kaaba. This is history,” the President said.

President Tinubu had earlier performed the Umrah rites at Masjid al-Haram on Friday, October 30, where he offered prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and prosperity.

Accompanied by several state governors, his son, Yinka, BUA Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu, Oando Chief Executive Officer Wale Tinubu and other officials, President Tinubu entered the Holy Kaaba, offered prayers and kissed the Black Stone, known as Hajar al-Aswad.

Rahman also disclosed that President Tinubu would visit Akwa Ibom State upon his return from Saudi Arabia to commission infrastructure projects as part of his renewed official engagements.

He added that the President would subsequently proceed to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for a political campaign scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026.
